Community and Health Development in Naama, Uganda
Students in this program are focused on improving the overall health and well-being of Naama’s people through outreach and education. Students participate in a variety of projects that may include conducting health assessments and providing health education classes to school children.
Project #1: Assessing Behaviors and Perceptions of HIV/AIDS and STI’s in Naama, Uganda
This project aims to assess perceptions and practices of sexuality and STI’s among teenagers of the Naama community. This assessment is then presented to community leaders and health workers as a tool to develop an improved sex education curriculum for Naama students.
Project #2: Adult health education, healthcare access, and emergency support services
Students help develop and implement a health education curriculum tailored to Naama adults. Students conduct individual research projects that have been developed in response to a demonstrated community need. These include community sexual practices and attitudes, nutrition improvement, and education based on laptop technology. Students have also researched the availability and accessibility of healthcare among Naama residents, especially at the nearby Mityana Hospital.
