Safe Drinking Water in Thomassique, Haiti
The rural community of Thomassique, Haiti obtains water from either a nearby river or a series of “tiyos” from which water is pumped from “Circa-la-source”. The water is contaminated with high levels of bacteria, leading to high incidence of diarrhea and dehydration.

In this project, students conduct research to measure the effectiveness of different safe water practices and then determine the best method to bring these practices to the Haitian community. They create or refine surveys that assess water, sanitation, and health issues both before and after the intervention. Students also work alongside the community toward meeting the World Health Organization’s WASH standards in schools.
