DukeEngage in Leogane, Haiti
Family Health Ministries (FHM) is a multi-ethnic, Christian, nonprofit organization whose ongoing mission is to develop long-term relationships and to support communities in their efforts to build and sustain healthy families. Currently, FHM supports programs in maternal and child health, community health, nutrition, and education in three communities in Haiti (Leogane, Fondwa and Blanchard). FHM leadership has worked in international settings since June 1993.
The program in Haiti involves working in one of two communities; Leogane or Fondwa. Leogane is a sugar cane growing and processing community located approximately one hour west of Port-au-Prince. FHM has been operating a cervical cancer prevention program there for 15 years. In collaboration with local partners, FHM plans to build a health center that will help address unmet needs of families in the surrounding communities, especially women and children. In 2007, FHM purchased 10 acres of land to build a center that continues a sustainable, grassroots model of FHM programs in Haiti. Students participate in clinic cancer prevention and outreach work, visit surrounding communities, gather data on community priorities, and identify opportunities that allow for sustainable building of physical and programmatic infrastructure.
Fondwa is a remote rural mountain community located approximately 45 minutes from Leogane. FHM supports a school, an orphanage and a clinic-based infant nutrition program in this community. In Fondwa, students are involved in health knowledge assessment, community mapping, and continued partnership development. This includes working with local community leaders to collect health information on children and helping with classes to teach health information and English.
