Against my will

May’s marriage – which was against her will – made her feel unsafe from the start.

“Once I asked my husband ‘Why have you come back late? I’ve been sitting in the dark with the baby’ and he started to beat me up.

“Life was very difficult. He was a womaniser. He often used to leave me home alone with the baby without food.”

After two years, May managed to get home to her family. And three weeks ago she managed to go back to school.

“If I come to school, learn something and get it right I feel like I’ve achieved something - that’s a good day.”

DFID funding to Plan International via UNFPA will support girls in Zambia like May to avoid early marriage through advocacy, education and policy work.
