The New World camelids include two wild species in the high Andes of South America-- the vicuna (Vicugna vicugna) and the guanaco (Lama guanacoe). The native peoples of the Andes domesticated these animals and though selective breeding developed the llama (Lama glama) and the alpaca (Lama pacos).
