Suzy Parker with Robin Tattersall and Gardner McKay, evening dress by Lanvin-Castillo, Café des Beaux-Arts, August 1956 © 2009 The Richard Avedon Foundation.
In his early career and throughout the 1950s, Avedon often went to Paris to photograph the latest couture collections. Rather than working in the studio, he used unusual locations throughout the city for his sessions. This photograph was made in the Café des Beaux, where model Suzy Parker appears looking chic in an elegant strapless evening dress while playing a game of pinball. Avedon used dramatic back lighting to accentuate the outrageous burst of white tulle cascading outwards from the back of her waist. In typical fifties ladylike style, her hair is upswept into a classic French twist, and the look is finished with white gloves and the perfect pumps.
