Standing In The Footsteps Of Giants

This is the former site of Tiger Stadium/Navin Field/Briggs Stadium/Bennet Park- home of the Detroit Tigers from 1895 until 1999. Tiger Stadium was built here in 1912 - opening the same day as Fenway Park in Boston. Babe Ruth hit his 700th home run almost at the exact point this picture was taken ( no - that is not the real home plate - that is a piece of wood that was left here that now serves as home plate ). Lou Gehrig took himself out of the lineup here- breaking his consecutive game streak. It was the site of the 1941, 1951, and 1971 MLB All-Star Games, along with World Series games in 1934, 1935, 1940, 1945, 1968, and 1984. The Detroit Lions also played their football games here from 1938-1974. The movies Tiger Town, 61, Raging Bull, and The Irishman were also filmed here. Growing up in this area and attending my first game here in 1974, it was very cool to walk the basepaths were so many legends once ran.
