Today's Picture Is Sponsored By The Letter "D"
Occassionally I get asked why I shoot so many buildings that are "past their prime", such as this one. There's quite a few reasons, so I'll only list a few. First of all, as there are so many buildings in this condition as a photographer I'm drawn to try and capture them before they are gone. I always wonder about the history of a building, how many people worked there, etc. I always hope these buildings can be renovated but in reality most probably cannot. There is a bit of nostalagia about capturing something from Detroit's peak growing years, when we were the 4th largest city in the country. But there's also the reality that a lot of people still do not realize the challenges we face here, and it's an attempt to make that public. I don't view this as "Ruin Porn" ( boy, do I HATE that phrase ) , but rather an opportunity for improvement. And things WILL get better here. So the letter D today does not stand for decay, it stands for determination.
