Aufruhr in Brügge! Der König gefangen gesetzt! - Revolt in Bruges! The King imprisoned!

    Newer Older

King Maximilian I. Imprisoned in Bruges!

What had happened? - Maximilian (1459-1519) of the Habsburg dynasty was elected King of the Holy Roman Empire (of the German Nation). Later he should follow his father Frederick III. as Emperor. - Flanders had come under the rule of the Dukes of Burgundy in 1385; Burgundy itself and the greatest part of the county of Flanders belonged to the Kingdom of France. By the marriage of Maximilian with Mary, the only child of Duke Charles the Bold of Burgundy, Flanders was dragged into the conflicts between the rival powers Habsburg/Germany and France. The war between Habsburg and France was very unpopular with the trading cities there, and early in 1488 Maximilian, having entered Bruges, was detained there for more than three months and only set at liberty on the approach of his father with a large force.

Craenenburg House at the western side of the market square is the place where King Maximilian was incarcerated in 1488 and from where he had to watch several of his followers being publicly executed. - 20 years before, in 1468, Margaretha of York stood at the windows of Craenenburg House to watch the games of the knights which took place on the market square to celebrate her marriage to Duke Charles the Bold. - In 1956 Craenenburg House was renovated, today there is a café.

König Maximilian I. in Brügge gefangen gesetzt!

Was war geschehen?

This 1956 facade, as most of the Markt gables in Bruges, is pure fantasy, a kind of Disneyland. Nobody knows how it looked originally. This is what it looked like before the 1956 renovation: www.beeldbankbrugge.be/components/com_memorix/popup.php?m...
