The Riddle of the Sphinx

"Which creature in the morning goes on four legs, at mid-day on two, and in the evening upon three, and the more legs it has, the weaker it be ?"

(Apollodorus - The Bibliotheca, III, 5, 8 - First or second century)


This lady was sitting on a table on the top of Lalita ghat facing the Ganges in Varanasi (Benaras).

She was looking the Sphinx, this mythical creature asking a riddle to allow the passage to the entrance of the city...


"Quel être, pourvu d’une seule voix, a d’abord quatre jambes, puis deux jambes, et trois jambes ensuite?"

(Apollodore - Bibliothèque, III, 5, 8 - Premier ou deuxième siècle)


Cette femme était assise sur une table en haut de Lalita ghat face au Gange à Varanasi (Benares).

Elle ressemblait au Sphinx, cette créature mythique qui posait une énigme pour entrer dans la ville...
