Their high energy consumption means their need for nectar is immense. Usually they are only hours away from starvation. The competition for sugar among the hummingbirds is fierce. They will battle each other for every flower and some will protect ‘their’ flower with all means, even against bigger species. The big brother on the right is a male Green-cowned Brillant (Heliodoxa jacula ), a species that likes to perch on everything, and the little girl on the left is a Black-bellied Hummingbird (Eupherusa nigriventris). The flower is a Hot Lips plant (Psychotria elata).
