1st Mechanized Brigade is currently the lead formation of British troops in Afghanistan for Operation HERRICK 18. The roulement tour sees the Brigade working in support of the Afghan Army and Afghan National Police. The Brigade took over responsibility for Task Force Helmand from 4th Mechanized Brigade in April 2013.
1st Mechanized Brigade is one of the Army's seven deployable brigades and is part of 3rd (United Kingdom) Division. It comprises armoured, mechanized and light role troops, making it capable of a wide variety of missions anywhere in the world.
The Brigade consists of a Headquarters Staff supported by 215 Signal Squadron, a variety of Combat Arm units and an assortment of Combat Support and Combat Service Support units enabling it to live, move and fight wherever and whenever it is required.
The Headquarters, which is based in Tidworth, Wiltshire, "commands, controls, force generates and trains units for operations in support of 3rd (United Kingdom) Division and the Land Component".
