The Afghan Air Force (AAF) has kicked off the New Year with its third annual Open House event held at Kandahar Airfield (KAF) in Afghanistan on 01 Jan 12. Over 500 tribal leaders, children, Afghan and Coalition personnel were invited by the AAF to the event. Their aim was to highlight the cooperation between NATO and Afghanistan National Security Forces (ANSF) and also to illustrate the capabilities of the AAF.
The opening ceremony, led by AAF Commander Major General Wardak, welcomed all visitors to the Kandahar Air Wing (KAW). From there the visitors explored the Afghan and Coalition static aircraft that were parked on the flight line.
The RAF’s 12 (Bomber) Squadron were kindly invited by the AAF to showcase a Tornado GR4 aircraft. The Tornado was a particular highlight and a large number of local children and elders visited the aircraft and talked to the aircrew. Accompanying the aircraft were Wing Commander Frampton and Sqn Ldr Lees.
The squadron, which is based at KAF, is part of 904 Expeditionary Air Wing and is a crucial asset in the skies over Afghanistan. The Tornado and other KAF air assets operate in harmony to provide vital support to ground troops, including ANSF, and contribute to the ISAF mission to stabilise and develop Afghanistan.
