Purley 'Signalbox'! 2

This is the top of the stone loading hopper building at Purley station's small railhead yard. The attempts to make it look like a signalbox are both awful and sweet! The 'windows' are just different- coloured panels with dummy frames, but the valances are the crowning glory! It's hard to imagine how such embellishment came to be - did anyone really think that the structure would look like a traditional 'box, or was it a visual joke by the railhead operators?
