Ethiopia, Hamer woman

Ethiopia, a woman from the Hamer tribe in Dimeka.

On the neck of the woman you can see three collars. The heavy metal collar worn on the top around the neck indicates that the woman is a first wife, the two other smaller collars mean she is also a second or third wife.

The bracelets, armbands, shelled belts, legbands and hairstyle, they all have certain meanings. They are also an indication of the wealth and social standing .

Hamer women are famous for their remarkable hairstyle. They mix together ochre, water and a binding resin and rub it into their hair.
