Kansas City Cake
So, if you've been missing me, here is why: I was asked about 6 weeks ago to take part in a cake competition to benefit the Newhouse Womens shelter in Kansas City. My friend and cake designer extraordinaire , (and 3 time Ultimate cake off winner!) Mike Elder organized the event. The only rules were that the cake had to be Kansas City themed and at least 3' tall. The competition took place in Kansas city this past Sunday night.
Our finished cake was over 4' tall. Starting from the bottom, we had a butcher block table, with tablecloth, giant utensils, wet naps and bread, Kansas city Royals tickets (playing the Oakland A's of course ;-)) then a giant bbq sauce bottle with custom label , then atop that, bbq ribs, pickles and corn on the cob.(oh and the food steamed too)Atop that was a huge harmonica that had the word "bluesband" imprinted on the top to represent KC blues and to crown it all was a shuttlecock , a replica of one of several sculptures by my favorite artist Claes Oldenberg seen on the lawn of the Nelson Atkins art museum in KC. Many of you know that my last and only other competition went not so well, and of course it had to be on TV. I totally never expected to win, I just wanted to FINISH.Well, first they announce the people's choice winner. We had been assigned the name " team wicked" so when they said winner of the People's choice award is team wicked it took me a few seconds to realize they were talking about US! then a giant check was brought out and when they turned it around, my name was on it! We were the GRAND CHAMPIONS! I couldn't help but cry, it was such a shock.Thank so much for letting me share my excitement!
