moehnke cemetery
I was alerted to this 72-person cemetery (pronounced “mink”) by a friendly, white-haired lady working in the Beavercreek Store. It functions largely as a family cemetery for a limited number of families, four of whom have contributed wrought-iron benches backing up along a chain-link fence (sometimes it’s hard for Oregonians to go that extra mile). It got its name by being “deeded to the Church Corp. of the Ohio Senate on Jan. 23. 1897, for the sum of $10 by Michael and Catherine Moehnke.” Carus Rd. is a delightful drive in itself, but if there’s one reason to drive out to this little-known cemetery, it’s to see the graceful, handmade stone for Marshall “Don” Higgins: an ingenious use of stained glass.

On Carus Rd. just before it intersects with Lower Highland Rd., if you're driving east from Carus itself.
