grand army of the republic cemetery (portland, or)
This would qualify as “hidden” were it not surrounded by Greenwood Hills. Its presence is subtle. The good news is that the statue of the Civil War soldier, after having been purloined, for years was missing and has been replaced. Metro maintains the one acre cemetery (though why not maintain Greenwood Hills is not understood), but they don’t have funds for improvements. There are, naturally, many Civil War veterans buried here, though their stones have often been vandalized or weathered. The cemetery is still available for burials, and you don’t even have to be a Civil War veteran. For instance, the lady who had the martini glass, with olive, etched into her stone certainly wasn’t Civil War.
