apostolic cemetery - silverton, or

An overly orderly cemetery where almost no stone jumps out of line, and they’re almost all flat ones, at that. An acre or so adjoining a new church building, one gets the impression that these folks bruck no nonsense. The grass is cleared from around each stone, each of which is ringed by a collar of small pebbles. And no one says a word. Nothing but the basic name and dates. They’re going to do their whopping it up in heaven.

Apostolic is at the beginning of the Waldo Hills, the southern terminus of the lower Willamette Valley. These rolling uplands lack the deep soils of the prairies and the nurseries turn into tree farms. The hills aren’t more than a lifting of the valley floor, but it’s sufficient to make them a place apart.
