South Lake Mine shaft

    Newer Older

Looking in to one of the South Lake mine's many entrances. This is one of the most spectacular open shafts that I've ever seen, although I don't think it was meant to be this way -- notice all of the fallen rock. There are actually two separate openings visible just in front of my fellow explorer, both of which lead in to a rather small mine.

Great shot for the 'solitude' theme! The guy looks so small against the hugeness of the cliff.

@debsij: Thanks! Believe it or not, that's not a cliff... that's just the inside of the shaft. Crazy, eh?

That is a huge cliff and the guy dwarfed in front--shows the size. Sounds like a great adventure--looking forward for more images.

I love the perspective you show here with the guy looking dwarfed by the massive rock around him. Cool!

whoa! Cool picture, and amazing that you found an open mine. How far in did you explore? (I see that at least your companion didn't have a hard hat - did you? Amy's and mine are hanging in our basement... you know, just in case we find an abandoned mine near GR ;)

@We Are CS: Yeah, it's pretty awesome! I think that this one is open because there's no reasonable way to close it. We went down to the first level (which is just barely lower than you see here) and did a minimum amount of walking around. Apparently it goes farther into the bluff (my companion here was more familiar with this mine), but there was still a lot of ice left in the drifts. Kind of freaky, actually, as we were briefly "skating" through a mine!

No helmets... we were not smart. Another reason why we didn't stick around!
