Noctilucent Clouds - Sky Tapestry

Noctilucent Clouds are a rare and beautiful phenomenon seen only at high latitudes during the Autumn, occurring far higher than any other clouds, at altitudes of up to 80 kilometers where they provide an eerie spectacle by catching the sun's rays after darkness has cloaked the world below. Never seen during daylight hours, even in perfectly clear skies, they materialize almost magically after darkness falls.

Still poorly understood, and until recently thought to be somehow related to concentrations of meteor dust in the upper atmosphere, they continue to be the subject of much scientific research. Aside from all that, they are just an incredible, beautiful experience! I photographed these above the Yukon River near Whitehorse, Yukon Territory around 2 AM on the morning of July 24.
