The Earth is Round

And how can you tell?? ... So is our shadow ... That's how the ancient Greeks knew of our planetary sphericity ... (2:20 AM PDT.) Beginning of the August 28 Lunar Eclipse, photographed from Whitehorse, Yukon.

A Bit Later .......

Well, Now that I've experienced a bit of sleep, I can relate the almost humorously simple way that this shot was captured.....

I was quite unprepared to do this the way I usually would (with film) So ......

I used my little Point and Shoot Lumix Digital ( admittedly, a very good P&S, a DMC-TZ1)

I left the lens at it's widest setting, 35mm, set the mode dial to MACRO (!) and merely pressed the lens up to my telescope's eyepiece and clicked. The camera gave me a shutter speed of 1/250th of a second.

My scope is a 5 inch refractor with a focal length of 1,867mm and I was using a 60mm eyepiece, so the telescope was delivering a magnification of 31 power. However, the moderate wide angle setting of the camera's lens likely cut that back somewhat.

The results weren't too awful, considering the simple way it was done !
