Texas Prickly Poppy

Nikki and I spent the weekend out in Fredericksburg to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary. We spent a couple of days there as a mini-honeymoon just after we were married so thought it would be a nice idea to go back.

During our previous trip, we visited Enchanted Rock State Natural Area so we decided to head back over there this morning. What a great idea that was - the wildflowers are amazing this year! This shot shows a Texas Prickly Poppy (Argemone aurantiaca) - one flower in a sea of blue, yellow, white and red that followed the loop trail along the creek.

I would greatly appreciate your vote in the 2012 Photoblog Awards. Thanks!

simis Frankly, neither did I until Nikki told me. I looked it up later to find the Latin name and apparently she was right (as usual)!

Hey Dave, I am planning a trip out there (maybe this coming weekend). Are the bluebonnets in abundance or should I wait a few weeks?
  • Dave Wilson 3y

Chuck Mitchell Chuck, the bluebonnets are fabulous this year. I reckon they will likely be at their peak next weekend so your timing is excellent.

Dave Wilson Did you guys take the Willow City Loop? Any suggestions on places to go?
  • Dave Wilson 3y

Chuck Mitchell Sorry - I don't know what the Willow City Loop is. We took the trail that heads right along the creek as you leave the parking lot and walk towards the main trail up to the summit. Apparently, it forms a 4 mile loop around the 2 main rocks in the park.
