Commemorative Tankard

My great great grandfather, James Cross, was Second Coxswain on the Clacton Lifeboat. In 1881 they rescued a French ship called the "Madeline" and he was given this tankard in commemoration. The inscription says:

Presented to

James Cross

By The Subscribers

To The Fund

Raised In Recognition Of

Brave Services Rendered In The

Clacton On Sea

Life Boat

James remained Second Coxswain of the lifeboat until he drowned whilst on a rescue on 23rd January 1884.
