This week's Project52 assignment is 'Power'. It was a conceptual shot with no real brief.
I find this kind of thing much harder than when I have a specific brief. So I decided to give myself some constraints. I decided to focus on green energy, and pretend that I'd been asked to create a shot to promote energy conservation.
Light bulbs sprang immediately to mind. I first tried placing a light bulb in a pot but the image was so clichéd it looked like it was straight out of Microsoft clipart. I thought some more and decided it needed a bit more context around the notion of earth, Gaia and general tree hugging, so I ran an extension lead into the garden and "planted" a low energy bulb. (The bulb is actually switched on in this shot, it's not been faked). I also used a couple of gelled strobes to light up the earth and the gardening equipment.
Of course, it started to rain midway through the shot. Rain, electricity and camera equipment -- not an ideal combination. Remarkably, I lived to tell the tale.
The main postprocessing on this shot is a circular gradient layer mask centred on the bulb.
Also for ODC: Earth, Wind or Fire.
