Sunday is named for the Norse goddess Sól, the patron of the Sun. The daughter of Mundilfari and Glaur, Sól was also known by the name Sunna and was the sister of Máni. Pursued by the wolf Sköll, she pilots the chariot Álfröðull, pulled by two horses, Arvak and Alsvid.

According to Norse mythology, prior to the end of the world Ragnarok, Álfröðull/ Sól will give birth to a daughter and then be eaten by the wolf, but the daughter will take her place.
