Crotalus Atrox, the Western Diamondback Rattlesnake

This little guy was a bit over 3 feet long. That means he could strike about 2 feet away with no problem.

 

Note how close the snake is to the camera and note that I'm still alive :) What you can't see is the tongs (www.tongs.com/shop/index.php?GrID=1&PrID=4) gripping the snake's torso about a foot behind his head. There was no chance of him getting away. Otherwise, I'd have been a hell of a lot further away from him.
