'The Memory of War' (Zen Abstraction #8)

One of a series of sculptural abstract expressionist pieces created from a colour photograph of rusting metal. As in many other expressionist pieces of mine Rothko is a major influence here.

This piece employs the metalic colours and forms of shell casings and other military hardware and those of tombstones and memorials to create a collective 'memory' of war, a subject which has long concerned me since our memory of war is invariably more significant in how we react to the past and plan the future than what may have 'actually happened'.
