House of the Sun

Early Hawaiians applied the name Haleakalā ("house of the sun") to the general mountain.

Pu‘u‘ula‘ula Summit @ Haleakalā National Park, Maui, Hawai‘i

David's thoughts about this picture selected in top 25 of 2012:

The goal is to see the sunrise in Haleakalā summit in early morning. The plan is I had to get up 4:00am in the early morning in the hotel just few yards away from the ocean, the temperature was 72 F degrees. I drove approximate 40 miles from elevation 0 to 10,000 feet in 1 1/2 hours with average speed limit of 35 to reach the top of summit, tallest peak in island of Maui. The temperature was wicked dropped to 37 F degrees as I get out from the car, and it was so cold! It was huge difference from 72 F to 37 F in 1 hour 30 minutes!

Now, here's is one of greatest moment to witness in my lifetime: the sun is hovering over the thick clouds in the sunrise which is COMMON almost everyday. It was awe, and I felt like I am actually on the plane. No, I am in top of mountains. It was great experience to survive the cold place in island of Maui.
