bike, windows, door and steps
This is one of my favourite photos of the trip.
Taken in one of the Hindu pols, the super-dense closed networks of old houses which make up Ahmedabad. The main roads of the old parts of the city form the boundaries of these pols - which are clearly either Hindu or Muslim. On the whole, apparently, commercial activity tends to take place around the perimeters of the Hindu pols but in the centres of the muslim pols. This being a Hindu pol, then, the interior is very quiet and swept incredibly clean - a notable contrast to the frenzied activity outside!
You enter through an archway off the main street, and suddenly all is calm and peaceful but for the cheerful activity of the women and children who tend to stay around the houses - sitting on their steps and chatting while they do laundry or make clothes. These houses were as old as up to 300 years, and often incredibly ornate - though not necessarily in the best condition!
