Back when you could still use the cable car to get from point A to point B.

Jim, cable cars are still serving locals and are a useful form of public transit around the north-east corner of SF, however the tourists dominate the system during the summer months. Of the three cable car lines, the California Street Line is used mostly by locals going from Van Ness Avenue to the Ferry Building. Cash fare is expensive ($5) but local riders ride free with their monthly MUNI FastPass.

I don't live there but visit often. I buy a MUNI pass for the amount of time I'll be in town, and the short-term passes are no good on the cable car. I'm not about to pay $5 to go a few blocks.
