Kolkata Streets

Taken in January, 2010 in the Behala locality of southern Kolkata. This image of the man selling snacks on the side of the street is not as clear as I would have liked it to be. I was only able to take the picture quickly from our car when the driver came to an intersection. And it was particularly dry since it was in January and we were driving through a cloud of dust. The road was covered with sand and dust and some of the side streets were all dirt. As cars went down the road huge clouds of dust would surround them. Most of the time while we were there I was taking pictures through a very solid haze. (You can also see my description of the pollution in this previous image.)

But I had to take a picture as it characterized so many of Kolkata's street merchants who set up their goods wherever they can find a spot. They sold snacks, or bread, or paan. Or maybe they were just giving out shaves. It didn't matter as long as they had a bit of sidewalk to sit.
