The monquirrowl is often described as a "owl-like fat little squirrel with a monkey face". Their relative scarcity makes the monquirrowl so difficult to study that comparatively little is known of their behavior. It preferably seems to occupy a roosting perch all day, remaining motionless unless directly disturbed. Under extreme circumstances, monquirrowls sometimes will employ an aggressive display by opening their huge mouth. Their call is a grunting "aaahh" which has a distinct nasal quality.
