The Coulter family didn't live in this structure - there was a log cabin nearby. This was to protect them against Indian raids and other threats. There was a loft for the women and children to climb up into while the men would stand on benches to fire through the rifle holes in the front. The Mudge family (who have owned the land since the 1840's) have done a wonderful job preserving the block house - adding steel lintels and a metal roof.
