Slipping Away (photo 1)
Change is part of life. But sometimes fighting for a way of life, and resisting change is necessary. The U.S. Army is currently trying to take thousands of acres of land in Southeast Colorado to expand a military base. The proposed expansion would take a big part of Southeast Colorado, and force hundreds of ranchers from their homes for no sound reason. The local people have been fighting for years, and because of their determination, they may have a chance to save ranches that have been passed down for generations. They have proved the expansion is truly not needed by the army, and have brought people's hearts to their cause from all over the U.S. The fight is far from over however, and I hope these photos will show what could be lost.
Local cowboys look on as the band plays at Cowboy Church in La Junta, Colorado. Preaching, clapping along with the music, and cowboy hats are the norm. It takes place in a sale barn every Tuesday night.
