Autumn Aspens in California

Dramatic weather patterns in the high Sierra means snow can fall anytime (even in summer). Aspen groves start to change their colors in late September and higher elevations (above 7000') are the first areas to experience the shift. The colors changes can be as short as one week or as long as two months. Early season storms can put a wet blanket in your search for Autumn colors, as leaves freeze, meadows chill and your camping vacation plans get altered. If Mammoth has snow, chances are the colors won't last long. Late Autumn colors can usually still be found in the Western Sierra Gold Country's river canyons and NorCal.
