Campground Fee Required

Campgrounds w/ minimal facilities should be a cheap overnight stay, if not FREE. The governing agencies often hire recreation managers or small outfits on a contract basis to take care of some campgrounds. That is the case with many camps in the Big Sur coast region. Many campgrounds in California are still maintained and managed by the local National Forest rangers. Your paid camp fees at places like this usually help with picnic tables, fire rings, toilets and the salary of the rangers. If you are seeking FREE campsites on the scenic Central Coast, then you'll need to get off the pavement and on to the dirt roads, many of which can be found on the Big Sur Backroads.
