Giant Sawtooth Mushroom, Lentinus ponderosus, Pacific Crest Trail near Sonora Pass, California
On what appeared to be a dying ponderosa pine right where the PCT runs across highway 108 there were five of these giant sawtooth mushrooms sprouting out from the base. The mushroom was really tough, but weighed a considerable amount for the size.
I tested this mushroom for cellobiase activity and its off the charts strong. Right up there with Shiitake. So any biofuel researchers out there interested in cellulose degradation, this would be a mushroom with studying.
