The Russian princess Maria Fjodorovna Barjatinskaja (1793-1858) was the daughter of German diplomat, and famous for being one of the most beautiful women of her time. Maria modelled for this sculpture when visiting Rome in 1818, and the statue was done 1819-1825 - but never shipped off to her. After her death relatives wanted the statue, but in the end they settled for a copy made by H.W. Bissen. The copy can be seen in the Pusjkin Museum, Moscow. This statue is made of marble and measures 181 cm.
