This has has become a family tradition... my family and a good friend made our way downtown Chicago to Daley Plaza... to enjoy the official Chicago Christmas tree and spend some quality 'German time' wandering through the annual holiday Christkindlmarket. The... what? =)
A few years ago on a Thanksgiving Day trip downtown, my family and I stumbled upon this festive gathering of German holiday tradition... and we've been back every year since.
Ohhh... the smell of bratwurst and leberkäse, both with sauerkraut, of course... hot potato pancakes with applesauce and sour cream... wonderful hot glühwein in a cheesy, way-too-expensive, boot-shaped mug... fresh, hot pretzels with mustard... chocolate covered 'everything'... roasted nuts... and I can't remember what all else!
Colorful, shiny ornaments and German Christmas decorations of all kinds (do you have a pickle ornament in your tree?)... and almost any kind of beautiful German craftwork and beer steins and this and that... way too much to write about here.
And then there's the official Chicago Christmas tree. Much better than last year's... um... effort. ;) Yeah... you might have seen it on TV and think... 'mehhhh'... but stand under it in person and feel the Christmas spirit begin to well up within you.
Go late in the day... when twilight begins to fall... and everything around you begins to glow. Such a nice way to spend a couple of hours on a late autumn evening. Have you been there yet? Just go!
