Rattle Box

Rattle Box Moth (a.k.a. Bella Moth, Inornate Moth, Calico Moth; Utetheisa ornatrix) - Bluefield Ranch Natural Area, 30501 Bluefield Road, Port St. Lucie, Florida

When I first spotted this moth I throught it was the Webworm moth I've seen in Jersey, but this guy was just the opposite with black spots on a white background. But then when it flew as I approached it, and I saw the pinkish orange underwing I knew for sure I had found something quite different. I spooked it numerous times to see if I could get it to land with its wings open a bit so I could photograph the under wing, but no such luck, as this particular guy wasn't about to show off its best feature.

Note: For years it was thought there were 2 subspecies of Utetheisa ornatrix in America,

but modern techniques have proven there to be only one species,

or as the die-hards might say,

thus far all the moths tested have been from the same subspecies. :{)
