Northern Water Snake

A young Northern Water Snake enjoys a warm Spring day.

Too many people think these "Northerns" are water mocasins and kill them. When I was younger, these snakes would reach lengths of 4 feet, but these days many are not much bigger than the leaves this one is resting on.

Hint: The vast majority of poisonous snakes have slits for pupils (like the devil), so please leave these round-eyes guys rest in piece. - The Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, NJ.
