Mount Bromo, Java, Indonesia, presently erupting, with Batok to its right, sitting within a Sea of Sand in the extinct Tengger caldera. Mt. Semeru is behind, Java's highest volcano. At the foot of Bromo you can just make out a temple, which is a uniform grey colour from the volcanic ash. Even at this distance, I had to clean my camera (and wipe off my coat) every few minutes to avoid damaging the zoom and focus mechanisms.
Bromo began erupting this time in late November 2010, with intermittent exclusion zones in place. I missed a visible lava burst while the camera was doing noise reduction on a long exposure.
This is about 6am I would guess - the dawn view was something very special.
