This photo was taken in the Nalcas-Malalcahuello National Reserves in Southen Chile, a place few cycle tourers venture. The image shows me cycling across the side of the giant basalt covered cone of a volcano. There are many active volcanoes in the region and they expect regular eruptions here. It was exciting and unnerving riding through real volcano country where the outskirts of the settlements have volcanic eruption warning signs. This strange road is one I will never forget, a sliver of track cut into the side of the mountain. The terrain was not always easy to ride on and often my back tyre became entrenched in the fine and loose rock, but as with all great biking adventures - the pain was worth the gain!
The photo was taken during my ongoing world tour. I hope to cycle the length of six of the earth's continents over an estimated five years. More information on my blog - www.cyclingthe6.blogspot.com
