Picacho Peak Battlefield
In early 1862, Confederate forces raised the Stars and Bars over Tucson, Arizona--part of a larger effort create an ocean to ocean Confederacy. Union General-in-Chief George McClellan, ordered a "column from California" to head eastward and drive the Rebels out. On April 15, 1862, Federal cavalry under Lt. James Barrett clashed with Arizona Rangers at Picacho Pass in the Arizona desert. When the sun set on this Southwestern battle, Barrett and two of his men were dead, along with three wounded.
