this was the worst spot, at the head of the box spring near the corner of the bedroom (covered up by our bedskirt, fitted sheet, and mattress pad). do not let this happen to you, internets: ENCASE YOUR MATTRESS AND BOX SPRING.

    yeah, it's kind of humiliating to say, "hi, we had this nastiness in our apartment," but knowing what to look for (and catch early) is huge.
