Falls of Dismal 18 Minute Star Trail (No Moon)
18 Minute Star Trail Over the Falls of Dismal. This is the first cold-weather adventure of the year. The temperature was somewhere in the low 30's, not super cold, but it's relative to the 70 degree days we had not too long ago. I love shooting these star trails in the cold weather because the sensor noise from the long exposure is mitigated by the cold. Later in the winter when the temps are below 20 degrees, exposures of several hours are possible with very little noise. In this shot, there is no moonlight at all, but my friend Jon Beard built a fire just below the big rock in the foreground. The light from the fire lit the falls and the background nicely, and the dark sky really made the stars pop.
