Once a year, Rackspace Blacksburg does a DevOps job shadowing day with our local rural school, Auburn Middle School.

Normally we have them out in the morning for a tour and shoulder-shadow time with one several of our dev teams. This year we did it a little differently and brought one of the devs down into a classroom environment for a custom tour of our code and provisioning process. After seeing how Rackspace clouds are born, we had some pizza, and then spent a couple of hours doing HTML and Javascript work. We helped the students create their very own web pages, and then publish them to our Kids Tech site:

for them to show their families and friends.

We had a great time hosting these kids, got to show them how clouds are born, and then teach them how to create web content using raw HTML and javascript!

But what really made it special was seeing the light bulbs come on as they created their first web pages ever, and the round of high fives as we pushed their content to the live web. It was very cool getting to be a part of this very real impact in these young lives.
