W. Little

Well, my dad's been gone for many years, and these are my recollections of the "event". The reason for the photography session never was made clear. There may have been six or more photos taken of various crews throughout the plant - the plant being Atlas Steels Ltd in Welland, Ontario. The time frame would have been early 1950s. We thought it was very clever that dad appears twice in the photo - in the background with his crew working an ingot on the 4000 lb hammer, and in the foreground with those monstrous tongs on his shoulder ! That shot was taken in the recreation hall at the plant. The funny part of the whole exercise is that my dad didn't really know who this "Karsh fella" was. We were familiar with his work and his fame, and soon had him up to speed. When the photos were ready, Mr. Roy Davis, president of Atlas Steels, invited the men and their wives to a special event in the company's main office and he made a presentation to each of the men. It was a very special event. Needless to say, we are very proud of our Karsh and are happy to be able to share it with you - and everyone.

Incidentally, this photo was published in one of Karsh's books (Yousuf Karsh: Industrial Images - by Cassandra Getty 2007, and his page is 105)
