Aqua Construction

The construction of the Aqua complex continues in Chicago. Have I mentioned how much fun it is to photograph this building?

wow ... another gorgeous photo! are you manipulating the sky at all?

In terms of the sky, I used the digital equivalent to a red filter which blocks most of the blue color from the sky. I punched up the contrast to make the white balconies pop from the dark sky and the unremarkable building to the north.

As much as I love this building I do have some reservations. I think it is going to look beautiful in photographs in nearly every lighting condition. from that standpoint it will be a lot of fun. However, now that I have seen what the finished glass looks like with the finished balconies in person I am afraid that the effect doesn't completely work in real life. There isn't enough contrast between the glass and the surroundings, and the different elements tend to run into each other more instead of working in collaboration to produce this striking form. This is still a magnificent building and I cannot wait to see the final form next year.

amazing shot! where is this building?

    6. The New No. 2 81 months ago | reply

      Thanks for the comments!

It is just north of the Blue Cross building. The street that you are looking at is Columbus a couple blocks north of Randolph.

Wow, how have I not seen this construction yet?? Finally a new building we can be proud of here. The new one just south of Grant park is turning out really cool too.

I think I would choke on 79 shots before it ever got to flickr. That's insane! Are you using a tilt shift lens?

If I remember correctly, Flickr will not display correctly any images which have more than 10000 pixels on the longest side.

Really excellent portrait of what is sure to be one of the more unconventional buildings of our time. This building gives a new perspective on the "windy city", and this is a good shot of it.
